The Tingara Challenge, hosted by Shark Island Paddlers was held on Saturday 16 March. We had two athletes competing in the long 15km course. Melanie Thomas on her Mistral and Cade Barnes on the DNA.

The 20 Beaches Ocean Classic is one of the most iconic Ocean Paddling races in Australia since first held in 1990 and run by the Manly Warringah Kayak Club. Traditionally raced from Manly to Palm Beach in a Southerly or Palm Beach to Manly in a North Easterly, the 20 Beaches Ocean Classic has attracted the cream of Australia’s best Ocean Paddlers, who vie to hold up the coveted Steve Wood Trophy. The Steve Wood Trophy is decorated with some of the legends of our sport who have dominated this race including, Dean Gardiner (1990,1992), Tim Jacobs (2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2013) Jeremy Cotter (2007, 2009, 2013), Murray Stewart (2008, 2012) & Clint Robinson (2011). Beyond the leading pack of competitors, the 20 Beaches Ocean Classic always provides a fantastic opportunity for paddlers to test their Ocean Racing skills on the challenging point-to-point racetrack.

When the opportunity came up to fly to Italy to visit Allwave Kayaks just outside Rome, and to paddle their latest creation, the Allwave DNA, I didn’t hesitate. A renewed passport later, and I was on my way.

When Mario Graziani called to say that there was an Allwave CX surfski in Cape Town and would I like to try it, I leapt at the chance. At the same time I was a little apprehensive – what could Italians possibly know about making surfskis?!
(Trying out a new ski is sometimes a little hairy. I tried a prototype once on a big downwind – the ski was a total lemon and had terrible drainage. The cockpit filled with water and the ski became almost uncontrollable. In the words of a Spanish friend, “I fear for my life”!)
